It’s that time of the year again – the winter chill is settling in, the cozy jumpers are coming out, and our skin is screaming for relief against the winter winds!

Whether you suffer from dry skin all year round or it’s a seasonal occurrence, here are our top tips that will help you to protect your skin this winter.

But before we begin, we need to understand what can actually happen to your skin during the colder months and why.

When the temperature drops, so do the humidity which can make the air incredibly dry in comparison to the warmer months of spring and summer.

The dry air then works to suck any moisture from your skin; those with oily skin have more moisture, but dependent on where you live and how cold it is, it will still eventually make your skin dry out.

If you don’t update your skincare routine to match with the temperature changes, your skin can start to break apart, making it red and itchy and even bleed.

This can be incredibly uncomfortable for your skin so here are five steps to prevent your skin from cracking!

Use the right moisturizer and moisturize frequently

The first skincare weapon we automatically reach for when we’re suffering from dry skin is the moisturizer.

Its very nature is to restore any lost moisture to our skin, but if you don’t choose wisely, this could aggravate your skin and make the problem even worse.

Look through your favorite moisturizer’s ingredients and see if it is full of natural ingredients.

Anything that is too harsh or filled with chemicals could irritate your skin and make it sore. Once you’ve found the best moisturizer for your skin’s needs, moisturize every night after you wash your face.

Don’t exfoliate too much

To combat dry skin, we use exfoliators. This is a good method to rid your skin of any dead skin cells or patches of dry skin that can easily become irritated.

So it seems natural to reach for an exfoliator during the winter months when your skin is at its driest, right? Wrong! If you rub an exfoliant over your skin when it’s reached a new level of dry, it can actually start to break down the good cells in your skin and can make it sore and irritated.

This isn’t to say that you should lock your exfoliator away for the rest of the winter – just use it once a week or even once a fortnight and follow the above tip to keep your skin as moisturized as possible.

Wrap up warm

Of course, we can’t protect all of our skin from the winter winds however much we may try to.

But you can do your best while you’re out exploring the winter wonderland outside your door or even just going about your daily commute by wrapping up warm.

Hats, scarves, and gloves are your friends – wear them! Not only will this help your skin, but this will also help to keep the rest of you healthy and avoid getting a chill.

Look after your skin overnight

It can be said that a lot of the products that we put on our skin can sometimes feel heavy – especially heavy duty face masks or skin serums.

If you don’t want to have this on during the day while you’re doing your chores then change your skin routine when you use heavier products such as moisturizers etc overnight so that you’re giving your skin a treatment while you get your beauty sleep!

Stay hydrated

Finally, it may seem to be a frequently used tip. But drinking plenty of water is not only the best thing that you can do for your health, but it’s also incredibly healthy for your skin.

Hydrated skin is the most natural way to restore moisture back to the surface of your skin and battle against dry skin without breaking the bank.

Everyone has access to water – turn to this to keep hydrated instead of sugary or highly caffeinated drinks.

If you follow all of these tips then you’ll be caring for your skin to the best of your ability and it will thank you for it! Stay safe this winter.
